FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS AT ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

St Paul’s Cathedral, London, is “hosting” the UK’s version of Occupy Wall Street.

Two weeks later after the protests began, the growing suspicion is that St Paul’s will join forces with the City of London to forcibly evict the protestors. St Paul’s senior priest, Rev Giles Fraser resigned yesterday, fearing the rumored eviction will turn violent.  Protestors in turn said they were  “deeply moved” by his resignation.

The Church now has an important PR weapon: an intermediary whom the protestors like and who also understands the Church’s dilemma.  Why not offer the Reverend a role as 3rd party mediator?

The PR Verdict: B Minus for St Paul’s.  Don’t just “express regret” over his resignation. Get him on board.  He is the easiest way to prove you are still committed to dialogue.

What is Your PR Verdict?

  1. Peter Emmerich says:

I so agree with you, Mark! In times where the church is struggling so much to retain a significance or at least a moral authority, the mediator role would be a very positive one (instead of telling us “poor sinners” all the time what we are NOT allowed to do).
