Kanye crashes on the runway

Superstar rapper Kanye West’s recent runway show in Paris was met with a resounding “non”. His resulting invective at those who disliked the collection got the sort of media coverage he didn’t need and undoubtedly got his backers worried.  What works in one industry doesn’t work in another.  While being in-your-face in the music industry doesn’t offend, the fashion world, especially post-Galliano, prefers its divas more restrained.  Kanye should have hidden behind a charming spokesman and given only one well timed interview about the lessons learnt from putting together his first collection. After that, straight back to the sketchpad.

The PR Verdict: “D” for Kanye.   No one likes a cry-baby.  Stop sulking and give your backers and buyers assurance that you are in it for the long term.

What is Your PR Verdict?

  1. Shefali Malhoutra says:

Very well articulated. Kanye should hire the PRVerdict to advise him!

  2. Dale Miller says:

I think you were too lenient with him. He should have received an F, for that other four-letter work, FAIL. I don’t pretend to know if his music is any good, but I can tell you that the House of Balenciaga is in no danger from Mr. West and his fifth-rate fashion talent.

  3. Peter Emmerich says:

I didn’t know who Kanye was until I read the NYT this morning. I just thought “he who cannot be quoted – because every sentence he says contains an obscenity – should grow up first, before staging a show in Paris.” Or ask his PR people to teach him to talk.
