The mess continues at Olympus, the Japanese camera and medical imaging manufacturer. The CEO was fired, the Chairman resigned and a new President was announced at a press conference yesterday.
Despite the change-up, nerves have not calmed. The key message for the President: stop endorsing previous management and instead cite ongoing regulatory enquiries as the reason why the firm can’t comment.
Better still, if you have nothing to say, say it in a press release and not at a crowded press conference. A statement from a friendly but circumspect press office can more safely do the speaking for you.
The PR Verdict: C Minus for Olympus. Despite obvious cultural differences this is an odd way to handle a crisis. Say less and get someone else to say it for you.
