Just as an airline apologizes to the families of crash victims, despite not having been there when the plane went down, what was needed was an apology acknowledging the suffering of friends and clients who had placed their trust in her husband. More grief for others was required from Ruth and rather less about her attempted suicide as the “hate mail” mounted.
An apology, even if she wasn’t directly responsible, was the very least she should have offered. Without one, her interview rang hollow.
The PR Verdict: “D Minus” for Ruth Madoff. This interview didn’t move the dial in her favor. If agreeing to an exclusive interview, insist that your key message is aired unedited. Unless of course you don’t think an apology is required.
